Why bagels? Because a comprehensive discussion of cool food shops is too much work. Without further ado:

Woodfire Bagels has good, smoky, Montreal-style bagels. Enough said. Get there earlier if you want them hot. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm (or until the bagels run out). (Near Fairview Mall in Kitchener, see map. Some 7 buses go right by there.)

Rise & Shine Bagels has genuine New York-style bagels. Definitely open Friday and Saturday (and maybe Thursday too), 7:30am to 2:30pm. (On Bridgeport in Waterloo, see map.)

As far as I know, these are the only two places to get fresh bagels in Kitchener-Waterloo. Though I hear you can get Gryfe's bagels at Vincenzo's.

Edit: Also, City Cafe Bakery.

Rise & Shine has Toronto-style bagels -- that is to say, they are attempting to make New York-style bagels, but failing.

Rise & Shine has Toronto-style bagels?????

That is NONSENSE.. Go to the place. You will see that he BOILS the bagels
in the genuine bagel boiling vat.. He does not steam them as they
do in Toronto.

These are REAL New York Bagels. I know because I spent three years
of my life near New York, and I go there about once per year.

Toronto bagels are WAY too soft, and Rise and Shine's bagels are
way too chewy to be Toronto bagels..
